The case concerned a posting on the "fansonline " web site . The post appeared to refef to a separate legal action involving the fans of Blackpool F.C. and the club`s owners. The post referred to Blackpool`s in- house solicitor as " the well known struck off solicitor " .The statement appeared on the website for 3 weeks and repeated on another website. It was read , at most , by hundreds of people.
The Court held the comment was not "mere tongue in cheek salon bar banter ", but was a serious libeland damages of £18,000 were awarded.
The lesson is clear - be very careful what you post on social media sites
