A local artist is about to stage a solo exhibition of paintings, prints and poetry at the Museum of Cannock Chase. Titled ‘Age, Decay and a Change of State’ starts on 23rd October and runs through to 16th December.
David McGuire is currently centring his art around urban landscape viewed through the lens of the changing state of architecture, how the materials gain a new aesthetic as they reach the end of their designated lives, finding beauty in the changing state of age and decay.
Davis explains ‘Urban and architectural decay appeal to my imagination. While some consider the collapsing parts of urban landscape ugly or disturbing, to me they are more stimulating than the picture perfect, and open my mind to opportunities for chronicling the progressive changes of state in their materiality’.
‘Some of these changes can be reflected in ourselves, as old age and its incumbent problems make us do and see things differently from when we were younger’.
David recently gained a first class honours degree in painting with the Open College of the Arts, and is presently Chair of Walsall Society of Artists.
While working for his degree, David found that poetry reinforces the deeper meaning in the work that he is now producing, and he intends to hone this skill, having recently developed a collaborative relationship with several poets from the Walsall area.
