Walsall's first away League One match of the season saw Saddlers visit Oldham's Boundary Park searching for a win to keep up their fine start to the campaign. After an uneventful start to the game for both sides, the visitors took the lead on 25 minutes thanks to a finish by man in form James Baxendale. Latching onto a loose ball from Craig Westcarr, the young winger beat ex-Saddlers loanee Mark Oxley to fire into the corner of the net. It was just the boost Walsall needed at a ground where they have not had much success in recent times.
Oldham were annoyed that a shot from Cristian Montano hit a Saddler's hand in the box but referee Gary Sutton was having none of it. Walsall put some good moves together at times but there were not many shots at goal despite this. Oldham really bombarded Walsall in the latter stages but the Walsall defence and Richard O'Donnell made several good saves to ensure that Saddlers came away with the three points. this result meant that Walsall have now won their first three games in all competitions.
