Sada Kaur came into the world on 21 August, almost three months earlier than her due date of 21 November.
Parents Jasmeet Kaur and Taranjeet Singh have been supported by staff at Walsall’s Neonatal Unit for the last month as their daughter was initially transferred to Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital. And they’re delighted their first baby is now well enough to return to their Walsall home.
Mum Jasmeet, 31, said her pregnancy had been going smoothly but she developed pre-eclampsia (a condition that causes high blood pressure during pregnancy) that can be life-threatening, and the umbilical cord was tangled around Sada.
“My Consultant said a caesarean was the best thing to do at that time, but I was very frightened because I knew she was going to be so small,” she said.
“When she was born she only weighed 685 grammes but after a day or two I saw the Consultant again and told him he did the right thing. It was explained to me that it is much easier for my daughter to have medical attention outside the womb than inside, and I was able to accept that.”
Sada needed two lots of bowel surgery and has also battled lung and breathing problems, but her proud parents were delighted to be told she could go home this Christmas week, and she left hospital today (Tuesday 24 December)
“The staff in Neonatal have been very compassionate and helpful, showing me how to care for Sada and giving encouragement to me. I can never pay them back for looking after her but also looking after me and my husband. They have checked on us too and make sure we’re coping with everything.”
Jasmeet, a carer, and Taranjeet, a dispatch operator, are now looking forward to becoming a proper family of three.
“She’s our first child and obviously a little fighter so we can’t wait to have her home and the fact that she’s home for Christmas, a special time of year, is even better.”
Kiran Chatha, Neonatal Community Outreach Lead, added: “We’re so happy to see this family finally able to be together at home after what has been a difficult few months.
“Sada is doing well and is absolutely beautiful! We wish them all the best for the future.”
