The aim of the treatment is to remove all the infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned with files and washes with bacteria killing chemicals, then its filled to prevent any further infection. The cleaning stage is usually done over a few appointments, the dentist will place antibiotics to kill any remaining bacteria and a temporary filling on top to help the treatment to be more successful.

The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled with a canal filling and a crown with placed on top.
