Walsall crashed out of the JPT thanks to missing three penalties in the shoot out after the 90 minute score was 1-1. It was a tie which the fans were hoping that some light relief from the struggles of league games may see a decent cup run and a long awaited Wembley appearance but in true Saddlers style they shot themselves in the foot.
It was a slightly better performance over the 90 minutes as manager Dean Smith made no less than six changes from the weekend.David Martin and Will Grigg both went close for Walsall in the first half. In the 49th minutes Rochdale took the lead thanks to a Bull effort. To their credit Walsall battled hard and got their reward when Martin sent over a ball for Hurst to fire home. But Hurst, Jarvis and Taundry all missed their penalties in the shoot out to add to the gloom of a so-far disappointing season.
