Shakespeare in Walsall Success

A successful monthly Shakespeare event in Walsall has published their programme for the first half of 2022, including popular plays The Merchant of Venice and A Midsummer Night’s Dream as they grow in their new home – The Victoria public house, Lower Rushall St.

Andrew Clayton, the organiser and literature lover who founded YOUR BARD said “We’re continuing to meet in the best traditions – beer and Bard. We moved down the hill from The Wheatsheaf to The Victoria before Christmas. Jason and his team have made us very welcome, even during the Plan B restrictions. We’re still asking everyone to get a negative test less than 48hrs before the event, to keep people safe, but we hope as we move into Spring that more people will join us to read through a play in its entirety.”

Once a month, a happy band of friends meet to read a full Shakespeare play. Roles are selected from the hat so everyone has the chance to read the big parts. Starting at 7pm on a Wednesday evening, the average play length is three hours.

“The fact we coincide with Steak Night at the Victoria is convenient,” continues Andrew, “but really it’s just about reading and enjoying the text. Not knowing how the plot will develop is just as fun as listening to familiar speeches and waiting for a favourite moment.”

In June the team will put on an extra reading as part of Walsall Festival of Words, breaking their run of Comedies to read Macbeth in full. Everyone is welcome at the events. More details can be found on their Facebook page – https://facebook.com/YOURBARD
