Brexit is here and the UK has legally left the European Union.  On Brexit Day,  Friday 31st January 2020 former Walsall Councillor John Rochelle led the communal singing at Druids Heath Golf Club in Aldridge with much flag waving by the local community and Walsall Councillors in the company of Andy Street CBE, West Midlands Mayor (pictured) and Wendy Morton, Member of Parliament for Aldridge & Brownhills before 11pm that evening when the UK officially left the European Union.   It was a historic moment and the dawn of an exciting new era.  "What better way to celebrate Brexit Day", said Wendy Morton MP "than to come together as friends with our friend - and the friend of the West Midlands - Andy Street.  He is not only "The John Lewis Man" but West Midlands Mayor and he has really put our region on the map, not only in Westminster but in the wider community.  Andy is the vision that this region has been crying out for - not only as the Mayor - but as our friend".     "There will always be an England" sang John Rochelle as the packed venue sang along in fine fettle with the standards "Jerusalem", "I Vow To Thee My Country", "Rule Britannia" and - of course - "Land Of Hope And Glory".  Walsall Councillors had a lot to celebrate, most  notably being the General Election back in December 2019 which saw Wendy Morton take over 70% of the vote share in Aldridge and Brownhills.  This success rested in community events and grass roots level support in Aldridge and Brownhills.      "It`s cool to be known as "The John Lewis Man" joked Andy street "because John Lewis is now seen to be cool again!  The General Election result for Wendy was the best result in all of the West Midlands - an incredible 71% of the vote share in Aldridge and Brownhills.  This is the re-election of Russia`s Vladimir Putin in style!  It`s an incredible score and a wonderful tribute to what Wendy is delivering for Aldridge and Brownhills.  I want to thank all of the Walsall Councillors and all of the volunteers who do such an incredible job in the community.  I have spent the day with Wendy looking at what Walsall Council is doing for the homeless in Brownhills.  Walsall Council is doing a brilliant job tackling homelessness.  It`s getting things done, lining them up and moving on to the next job."   Andy Street CBE described Walsall`s economic record, new jobs, rate of growth across the West Midlands and the new homes that have been built, nearly all of them on brown field sites.  2I want to leave the green belt alone!" he said to loud cheers "because Aldridge is a wonderful place!  We have invested and improved public transport and Wendy Morton will not leave me alone until I have re-opened Aldridge Station!", he said, to even louder cheers.  "It`s the hard work and graft and commitment to the community that makes all of the difference".     Andy Street CBE has secured over £1.7 billion of new government money - more than any other region.  He is working hard to create more jobs in our area, to bring investment into building homes and improvements to the local infrastructure.  he is proud to fly the flag for the West Midlands and the local community in Aldridge and Brownhills were grateful to him for coming back to tell them about the many more exciting things he has planned for the future and the region.    And former Walsall Councillor John Rochelle sang "There will always be an England" as the clocks ticked inexorably towards 11pm and Brexit from the European Union.
