Walsall came within a couple of minutes of victory at Chesterfield's impressive b2net stadium on Saturday but once again failed to defend properly which cost them them a couple of points and stay in the relegation zone. The Saddlers were looking to bounce back from their disappointing exit in the FA Cup and concentrate on the league and make up some ground.
Walsall started the game quite brightly and looked as though they meant business at times in the first half trying to set up play and look for an early goal. They had to wait until the 29th minute but a well worked goal gave the team and the long-suffering supporters a lift. Anton Peterlin delivered a fine ball which Alex Nicholls cooly slotted home just inside the post.
Walsall went in at half time looking confident and it was hoped they would build upon this lead. However Chesterfield had other ideas and came out in far more determined mood in the second half whereas Walsall went into their shell and defended far too deep. Jimmy Walker had to make a few saves and Jon Macken had one good chance but then with the game almost won Jack Lester pounced to break the hearts of everyone in the Walsall camp.
