Against all odds, brave Walsall did the seemingly impossible- staved off the fear of relegation on the final day of the season. Losing 1-3 at Southampton didn't matter as Peterborough's 5-0 demolilition of rivals Dagenham And Redbridge meant that The Daggers finished one point behind The Saddlers in the League One table but it could have gone either way.
Pre-match the 1,663 Walsall fans were in good voice in the away bar singing all sorts of pro Walsall songs and were defiant that their team was staying up. Walsall and Saints both started off a little nervy but once Saints got two goals in quick succesion through Guly Do Prado and John Connolly before Saddlers Julian Gray pulled one back with a fine solo goal.
By now Dagenham's leaky defence were letting in the goals again and when Alex Chamberlain got Southampton's third and final goal it mattered not. Each one of Peterborough's goals was greeted with a massive cheer as news filtered through. As the final whistle went at St Mary's both teams had a celebration. Southampton were on their way to the Championship and Walsall remained in League One. Dean Smith has worked a minor miracle in keeping his team up. Everyone connected with Walsall FC can only hope for a far better season in 2011/12.
