To mark British Science week, Rt Hon Valerie Vaz MP hosted an event in Parliament on 11 March 2020 with the Royal Society of Chemistry and learned some new chemistry skills with scientists.

Rt Hon Valerie Vaz MP said:

“I was delighted to host a chemistry demonstration event in Parliament again and help MPs see the importance of chemistry and other sciences to the UK.”

“MPs got hands-on with the experiments, which included making a pH indicator using red cabbage, creating a colour changing neutralisation reaction, and making polymer slime. But behind the colourful chemicals was an important message about the prevalence of chemistry in everyday life. It’s incredibly important to work with scientists so we can find the solutions to advance innovation and tackle pressing global challenges.”

“I spoke to the Royal Society of Chemistry about the importance of scientific research in addressing challenges that affect constituents in Walsall South as well as globally.”

Dr Jo Reynolds, the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Director of Science and Communities, said:

“Our planet is facing critical challenges – from climate change to human health – and the chemical sciences have a vital role to play in advancing innovation and addressing those challenges.

“It’s important to ensure that policymakers have access to the evidence they need to make informed decisions and we were delighted that Valerie was able to help us do this again. Great science can only take place when we have great collaborations, and that’s why we’re so pleased to see members of parliament taking opportunities like these to engage with chemical scientists.”
