Walsall faced Premiership team Crystal Palace at home in the Football League Cup with the London club apparently in crisis with losing their manager Tony Pulis and it seemed a possible candidate for a potential cup upset could occur. Well it took just six minutes for our visitors to take the lead following a quickly taken free kick which caught Walsall out cold. Dwight Gayle gave Richard O'Donnell no chance with a fierce shot. The same player went on to score a hat trick and it was impossible for Saddlers to get back in the game such was the gap between the teams. The second half was not so punishing and Walsall even tested the visiting keeper Wayne Hennessey on a couple of occasions but the cup exit was always going to be the outcome.
