In his first full length collection, Gerald Kells takes us from the personal to the
profound, from far off vistas to close up observation, from love to bereavement and
from despair to hope. He presents 51 poems which aim to make the reader question
and also wonder.
Collected from old and new poems this selection is at times personal, about
bereavement and love, at times contemplative, as he journeys from the fells of the
Lake District to the Mourne Mountains to the South Coast of England. There are
comments on politics and spirituality, setting up in places a dialogue between hope
and doubt.
Gerald says a Collection was something he’d wanted to publish for some time, but
was never sure what to include, so he started by looking for poems which were
sonnets or similar, and then put 51 of them in alphabetic order so that they would
sort themselves.
And he’s very pleased with the result. As for the title, LI is simply the Latin for fifty-one, but it’s also a bit of a pun. How much of what we write is true? he asks. How much invented? Can we trust ourselves?
You can get hold of the book at Gerald’s readings, but if not it’s available from Lulu
