Walsall continued their sparkling home form with a splendid 2-0 home win over high-flying Tranmere Rovers who were in the top six. This was a chance to gain ground on a top club and Walsall took advantage. Saddlers did find it hard going to start with against a club well organised but withstood all they threw at them with the Andy Butler/Paul Downing centre back partnership rock-steady at the heart of the defence.

Tranmere were so hard to break down and force shots against but Walsall made that all important breakthrough in the 50th minute. Febian Brandy went on one of his determined runs and was felled in the area by Danny Holmes. Penalty king Will Grigg stepped up to do the deed and fire Walsall into the lead. This was Walsall's fourth consecutive game in which Will Grigg had converted a spot kick.

Walsall doubled their lead with a superb individual goal from the hard-working Craig Westcarr  who went on a run and fired home a powerful strike from fully thirty yards to make the game safe. Walsall also hit a post and played really well to get into that position and also to hang onto their lead. It was a superb demonstration from Dean Smith's men into how to win games. Saddlers now find themselves in eigth spot just four points behind the promotion chasing pack.
