"We believe in standing together and supporting mental health" said Paul O`Connor, lead instructor at Sparta Krav Maga in Walsall. "It`s all about raising awareness for mental and physical health. It`s free and open to members and non-members. We are inviting people to come along and share and, along the way, maybe heal a little. We believe that it`s important to open up and talk. It`s free to attend although donations are welcome and will be donated to charity".
Paul O`Connor believes that mental health is as important as physical health. According to the Office for National Statistics, in 2022 there were 5,642 suicides registered in England and Wales and three quarters of these were male, a trend seen since the mid 1990s.
"On average" explained Paul "84 men a week in the UK die by suicide and that`s 12 per day, one man every 2 hours. Suicides amongst men account for 75% of all suicide deaths. We need to get the message out there that men are allowed to be sad and that it doesn`t make them any less of a man. As a club based in Walsall, we want people to know that it is okay to talk about their mental health."
Sparta Krav Maga in Walsall is part of the International Krav Maga Federation. Krav Maga is a self defence system that is for all. It is used worldwide by armies, police and civilians. It is a self defence system that integrates simple and instinctive moves accessible to all.
"The fitness benefits that come with training in a self defence programme include a myriad of physical, mental and emotional benefits" explained Paul "that can help you lead a happier, healthier and more productive life".
The next session to raise awareness for men`s mental health is Saturday 1st June 10 - 12pm. Sparta Krav Maga are now also running a ladies only session.
"It`s a safe place for ladies to chat about mental health" said Paul "and for ladies to stand together. It`s also open to members and non-members and is completely free. "
