Walsall’s getting the two multi-million pound leisure centres it was promised by the council after a decision was made to take action rather than let the ever-rising price get any higher.
Two existing swimming pools and gyms at Oak Park in Walsall Wood and High Street in Bloxwich were voted to be completely rebuilt by members of Walsall Council’s cabinet last night. This decision has been a long time in the making – the original plan would’ve cost £3 million, however, the cost continued to rise over the duration of time it took to make a decision to £24 million.
Councillor Anthony Harris stated that “The longer we wait, the more expensive it gets.”
The overall decision being favoured after health concerns for the residents of Walsall were recognised. It is hoped by the council that these brand new facilities would help fight the borough’s growing obesity problem.
Alternative, less expensive plans would have meant refurbishing, or building smaller leisure centres.
