The boxing club at Racing Club Warwick is in desperate need of funding & is calling out to local people & businesses to help it survive.
The boxing club was frequented by the recently deceased boxing legend Jackie Turpin & plays a pivitol role in the local community by teaching members about the importance of discipline & hard work. This is backed up by the fact that there are no ASBO's in the area & has recently produced some boxers of a high calibre such as Ronny Malloy who has represented the country.
The club is completely funded by its members but this barely covers the utility bills, let alone building repairs & the replacement of training equipment.
A new fund-raising drive is happening with support from local media such as The Observer (article HERE). Racing Club Warwick coach Steve Myrie is hoping local people & businesses will realise the importance of the club locally and is hoping they will show their support which will not just allow the club to survive be possibly even expand with plans to include a girls boxing team.
One of the motivational printed mottos stuck to a wall at the club reads: 'Other people may not have high expectations for me but I have high expectations for myself.'
In a report with The Observer Steve Myrie said:
“It is incredibly important local people have somewhere like this – I'm told there is no one with ASBOs around here and I'm sure we've played a part in that. Boxing teaches important life lessons. Not just discipline and hard work, but also that there will be times when you have to change course and be adaptable. Some come down here quite shy at first but end up coming out of their shell."
Warwick resident Jim Hardwick, 36, said: “The reaction you get from friends and family is often that you have to be a nasty piece of work to box, but it couldn't be further from the truth. It taught me control, and I didn't lose my temper half as much.”
