Lots of major developments in Watford step up a gear in 2016, so residents and visitors are asked to bear with us, as Watford remains open for business.
We’re building a new road to speed up access to the hospital. Gas main replacement works have to take place to make this happen. Unfortunately, this means a section of Wiggenhall Road will be closed to southbound traffic (towards Bushey/ Oxhey and Eastbury Road) from 11 January 2016 for around 6 weeks.
Commuters are being urged to avoid Wiggenhall Road during this time, and use an alternative route in and out of town. Local diversions will be in place and will be well sign-posted.
Moving into the town centre, the county council is making some improvements to the cycle route on the High Street and Lower High Street to connect it to the National Cycle Route 6 near the fire station. They will also be upgrading the crossing over Exchange Road so that pedestrians and cyclists can cross over to both sides of Lower High Street.
Alongside these works, Watford Borough Council will widen the footway in Lower High Street, to match the already widened section along King Street – this will allow the restaurants and cafes to offer outdoor seating. The works include moving a bus stop just a few metres up the road. These works will start at the end of February, and last for around 8 weeks.
Finally, and very excitingly, demolition work will be starting soon at Charter Place; which will mean some extra heavy truck traffic around the ring round.
Councillor Iain Sharpe, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration & Development said:
“We are sorry in advance for the disruption these works will cause. We hope you agree, however, that the long term benefits will outweigh the short term inconvenience. Quicker access to the hospital; an improved gateway to the bottom of town and a new leisure and shopping centre will ensure Watford continues to be a thriving and successful town.’
