Watford Borough Council and London Midland are providing 142 additional spaces for cyclists at Watford Junction Railway Station – so there’s no excuse but to get on your bike!
A new two-tier bike shelter and four new cycle stands have just been installed by Watford Borough Council at the side of the station and provide an additional 38 secure spaces – 58, when there were previously 20.
A further 104 additional spaces will be provided in a purpose-built cycle hub, which is being installed by London Midland and part-funded by Watford Borough Council. The new structure will be situated on the former platform five of the railway station – adjacent to platform six. It will contain a long single-tier line of sheltered cycle racks, which will be covered by specially-installed CCTV cameras and lighting.
By the time both phases are complete, there will be an additional 142 secure spaces for cyclists to leave their bikes securely at Watford Junction Railway Station. This will bring the total number of cycle spaces at the station to 324.
Cllr Iain Sharpe, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Development, said: “We want everyone to get out of their cars and onto their bikes. It’s more environmentally friendly, it’ll improve your health, and you won’t have to pay for parking. These spaces will make it easier for more people to use their bikes, so we are very happy to be involved in this project with our partners at London Midland.”
Steve Helfet, London Midland’s Head of West Coast Services, said: “London Midland has been encouraging cyclists and investing in more facilities at stations for the last 10 years. This scheme is a double win for Watford. It provides more spaces for cycles while making the front of the station more welcoming.”
