Deputy Mayor of Watford, Cllr Peter Taylor, joined the celebrations last Saturday to mark the opening of the town’s new Gaelic football and hurling facilities.

The facilities, at Radlett Road Playing Fields, are the new home of Watford-based Glen Rovers Football Club, which is one of the town’s oldest and most successful sports clubs, having inspired generations of Gaelic football players and hurling enthusiasts since it was founded in 1953.

Cllr Taylor was joined by local Tudor ward councillors at the event and saw players aged from five to 60 and of all abilities and backgrounds come together to take part in their sport.  Cllr Taylor then joined Aogán Ó Fearghaíl, who had flown in from Ireland especially for the occasion, in unveiling the new pitch and facilities, which include an on-site kitchen, referee’s room, four dressing rooms, and toilets.

Cllr Taylor said: “Glen Rovers are a really inclusive club, so I am delighted that the council has been able to support them with this fantastic new facility. It is great to have them here in Watford and I am particularly pleased to hear about the work they are doing to encourage our young people to have a go at Gaelic football and hurling. You only have to see the commitment and enjoyment of the people here today to realise what great sporting activities they are.”

Mr Ó Fearghaíl said: “This is one of the finest developments I have seen anywhere. We are thrilled that Watford Borough Council has been so supportive, and so cooperative. There has been a great partnership here that has happened between the council and the GAA. This is a very historic day.”

Jeremiah Brennan, President of Glen Rovers, said: “The changing rooms are out of this world. It is the most beautiful building we have ever stepped inside of in this country as far as Gaelic football dressing rooms are concerned. For that, we want to thank the council most sincerely. All we can say is: ‘Well done to the council.’”

Glen Rovers membership costs just £25 per year, or £50 for a family with four children. However, you don’t have to be a member to have a go at Gaelic football or hurling with Glen Rovers. Everyone is invited to come along and see what it’s all about.
