This course prepares the student for working in the health and fitness industry as a fitness instructor able to plan, instruct and evaluate gym based instructions and client programmes. The course is suitable for students who already possess a good level of health & fitness and take an active interest in the sports industry.
This is also a useful additional qualification for students of sport and exercise related courses who wish to work either part or full time in the Health & Fitness industry.
Course Aims
The course aims to provide the learner with the knowledge, understanding and skills to plan, and instruct gym based exercise.
Course Details – Qualification Structure
There are six mandatory units in total:
1. Anatomy & Physiology for Exercise
2. Know how to support clients who take part in Exercise and Physical Activity
3. Health, Safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment
4. Principles of Exercise, Fitness and Health
5. Planning Gym-based exercise
6. Instructing Gym-based exercise
Successful achievement of all six mandatory units must be achieved for the full qualification.
Once the mandatory units have been passed, other optional pairing units can be taken to expand a portfolio of expertise in the fitness industry, E.g. Group Indoor Cycling, Circuit Training.
Course Content
The course covers the following units of study: Anatomy & Physiology for Exercise, Know how to support clients who take part in Exercise and Physical Activity, Health Safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment, Principles of Exercise, Fitness and Health, Planning Gym-based exercise, Instructing Gym-based exercise
Assessment
The course is assessed through a portfolio of evidence including:
Multiple Choice Theory papers
Worksheets
Gym Practical - You will be required to bring one helper to your practical assessment.
Where is the course taught and by whom?
It takes place at the Hertfordshire Sport Village, University of Hertfordshire, de Havilland Campus Hatfield. The course will be delivered by Nick Bishop and assessed by Anya Higgins.
Pre-Requisites
There are no formal entry requirements other than an interest in health and fitness and a commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle.
When does this course run?
The course is run as a 2 week intensive, delivered over 8 days in May/June 2016
