How to look younger? Top tips from The Skin to Love Clinic

Fads may come and go, but there are just a few classic essentials that’ll keep you looking younger, and slow down the signs of ageing. You probably already know what they are, but there's no harm in reminding yourself what to do. They'll also have the bonus of helping you stay fit and healthy too.

Stop smoking!

If you're still addicted to nicotine and need the motivation to quit, remember that smoking ages you. It deprives your skin of oxygen and nutrients which gradually destroys the collagen and elastin, making the skin go saggy and giving you wrinkles, age spots and the puckered lips which are a giveaway to your status as a smoker. Smoking also damages your teeth and gums. There is even evidence that smoking accelerates hair loss in both men and women. And if you live in the same house as a smoker, don't forget that the ageing effects of smoking also affects passive smokers.

Stay out of the sun

We've said it many times before and we'll keep on saying it - use sunscreen! The effects of harmful UV rays can add 20 years to your skin; only a small amount of damage can add extra years.

Moisturise

Again, we say this a lot, but it's worth banging the point home that by preventing your skin from drying out, you're helping to keep wrinkles at bay.

Water

Essential for your body's overall health, staying hydrated will also improve your skin. If you're dehydrated, your blood becomes thicker and sluggish, so drinking plenty of water helps with healthy circulation at the same time as cleansing your system, getting rid of the toxins in the body. What's more, if you don't drink enough, your body diverts moisture from your skin cells to the blood, and dry skin is much more prone to wrinkling.

You're sweet enough

Uh oh, sugar isn't only bad for your waistline and your teeth, it's also bad for your skin. The way your body digests sugar causes it to break down collagen and elastin - those vital ingredients for keeping your skin looking young.

Exercise

The more you exercise, the younger you'll keep your body, with adults who do high levels having a nine-year advantage in terms of cellular ageing over those who don't exercise at all.

Facial exercises

Don't just concentrate on exercising your body. By exercising the 60 or so muscles in your face with the right kind of facial exercises, you can achieve good results.

Aesthetic treatments

If you want to give Mother Nature a helping hand, there are non-invasive treatments available that will help soften the signs of ageing and help you look younger, including fillers, wrinkle relaxing injections, laser treatments, etc.
