1800 years ago Romans settled near Welwyn. There was a fine villa, Dicket Mead, which was built in 3rd century AD and today you can visit its bath house, which is preserved in a steel vault under the A1! It’s quite amazing. You enter through a tunnel near the A1 junction with the A1000.
The baths were discovered in 1960 and excavated in the ten years after – before the A1 was built overhead.
From raised walkways you can see the layout of the cold, warm and hot rooms and learn about Roman bathing habits. Definitely worth a visit.
The Baths are open at weekends and on Bank Holidays from 2pm to 5pm. Admission is free for children, with a small charge for adults.
