The Society was formed over forty years ago in response to the threat posed to our heritage by modern developments: building construction, pipelaying, road building, agricultural and mineral extraction. It still supervises all developments - vetting planning applications and observing groundworks of all kinds.\r\rThe Society also carries out excavations and other research both indoors and out, and represents the interests of archaeology with local and national bodies.\r\rIn addition to this the Society organises a programme of lectures by speakers of national standing, outings to heritage sites and social functions. Its members come from all walks of life, united by their interest in the past.\r\rVisitors are always welcome at our meetings and on our excavations. The Secretary will be glad to let you know where and when we are meeting.\r
