In 2007, The London Marathon ran its way into the record books by raising a whopping £46.5 million, making it the single largest fundraising event in the world. This record was smashed in 2008 with another £46.7 million being raised by the marathon and since 1981, over £450 million has been raised.
Today, over three quarters of London Marathon competitors run for a charitable cause, raising much needed funds for their various causes. This has led to iconic image of the London Marathon - thousands of people taking to the streets (often in very entertaining fancy dress!) to make a difference, however small, to the world we live in.
A total of 746, 635 have completed the London Marathon since 1981 and there is no other fundraising race that compares to it. The London Marathon Trust has helped nearly 700 charities over the years, supporting projects here in London such as the building of new community sports and recreational facilities.
The official charity for the London Marathon 2010 will CLIC Sargent, the UK's children's cancer charity. The funds raised will go to providing nurses and other care professional to be there for young cancer sufferers across the UK, at every step. This specialist support is vital to recovery and high quality care in hospital, at home and in the community.
