Local ‘Human Statue’ adds fizz to to Ely's Christmas Party and Fashion Show on 2 November 2011

On Wednesday, 2 November 2011, local Wimbledon man, Matt Walters, brings 28 years of human statue skills to one of Elys most important days of the year, their annual ‘Christmas Party, Shopping Event and Fashion Show’, held in conjunction with Time and Leisure Magazine.

Starting at 9am, there is 20% off on nearly all items in store, plus entertainment for all the family throughout the day, much of which is being provided by local agency, StarTurn Entertainment - founded and run by Raynes Park’s, Caroline Geraerts. 

The climax of Elys event is the champagne reception at 6.30pm followed by the Fashion Show at 7.00pm. The Elys event finishes at 9pm.

Matt has been following an historic tradition in creating tableaux vivants or living pictures – an art form that dates back to medieval times where actors in costumes created a scene by remaining silent and still, just as in a picture. Matt decided to become a living statue after he saw his first one when walking through the Fontainebleau gardens in Paris – the impact of seeing a crowd growing around the statue every time it moved was his inspiration.

Famed for his chimney sweep – and a regular site in Covent Garden - Matt will be creating a new character especially for Elys. “I’ve been living in Wimbledon for seven years now and pass Elys on an almost daily basis.  I never dreamt that one day I’d be performing there!”

Caroline Geraerts of StarTurn Entertainment, this year short listed for the Merton Business Awards ‘Best Hospitality and Leisure‘ category, says she is thrilled to working with both Matt and Elys.  “I did a little tweet one day in response to one of Ian Turner’s tweets – Elys and Morley Stores Marketing Manager - and it gave me the perfect opportunity to expand StarTurn’s portfolio of artists and meet Matt who is reputed to be the best human statue in Europe! I’m so proud to be providing local artistes for local entertainment – they day is going to be just fabulous!”
