Merton's award-winning libraries are looking forward to a week of celebration and giving the community a taster of the range of services they offer in the run up to National Libraries Day.
To mark National Libraries Day on 9 February 2013, and to help celebrate the role of libraries within the community, Merton Libraries are holding a range of open days and event taster sessions all week. With taster sessions to suit everyone, new and existing library users will have the opportunity to get involved in the range of activities that libraries hold free of charge on a weekly basis.
Morden Library’s special open day on Saturday 9 February will include sessions on knitting, scrabble, children's story-time, IT Support, a children’s treasure hunt and more.
Mitcham Library is also hosting an open day on Wednesday 6 February with taster sessions in well-being and exercise, IT Support, and a special showcase of story telling.
Raynes Park is staying open until 9pm on Thursday 7 February to give as many residents as possible a taste of their library activities too.
Donald Hope is also marking the national day of celebration by hosting a special themed coffee afternoon with a 'History of Leisure' talk given by comical historian Rosie Graves on Thursday 7 February at 2-3.30pm.
National Libraries Day takes place across the UK annually as an occasion to celebrate libraries and librarians, and highlight the importance of reading.
Merton Council’s member for community and culture, Councillor Nick Draper said: “Residents in Merton should really use National Libraries Day this year as a reason to get down to their local library and become a member. During this special occasion we should also celebrate that, not only have all our libraries remained open, they are consistently improving their services and are considered to be amongst the best in London through the help of excellent volunteers, committed staff, new technology and events to suit everyone. Our libraries are very successful and offer a great service to the local community. If you're not already a member, next week is the time to take a look at what our libraries have to offer, try out the taster sessions and join your local library."
