An evening at Eton College

I was fortunate enough to be invited to Eton College last night as someone's 'Plus One' for an evening with some of the people who look after the many historical collections held within its walls - many from 100's of years ago.

I had never been inside the college before and I was not sure what to expect. Just inside the main gate is a stunning courtyard covered in cobbles with absolutely no discernible modern additions to the architecture or layout. And because the uniform of the boys is pretty much the same as it has been for years, you could be forgiven for thinking you'd gone back in time.

We were first shown the Seven Halts on the Somme exhibition in the Verey Gallery. This is a collection of oils on linen canvas painted by Hughie O'Donoghue which represents scenes from World War One. A little bit Turner-esque in style, you can stare at the paintings for ages and conjur up a never-ending stream of different story scenarios.

We were then shown to Upper School where every piece of the panelling and wooden stations is covered with chiselled graffiti from past centuries - many created by famous Old Etonians such as Shelley.

Gladstone ran out of space carving his name so the 'e' had to be carved below the rest of it!

Some new carvings are still added - these can be approved if boys can prove a direct ancestry to other carved names in the Upper School AND if a space can be found.

Eton College had gathered together some old photos of Eton High Street showing shops, the two major floods from the last 120 years and marching soldiers from WW1.

The final treat was a glimpse into the old library with its massive collection of bound books and beautifully carved architecture built in the17th century. Here we were shown some more items chosen from the Collection's archive - old bills for services provided to the Eton boys such as a shampoo and hair cut, wet shaves and football boots.

A fascinating glimpse into Eton life from times past.

Before last night I had no idea of the richness of the Eton College Collections - and to think this is on our doorstep!
