Wayne Hemingway (MBE) English fashion designer and co-founder of Red or Dead, and chair of Building For Life (the national standard for well-designed homes and neighbourhoods forum) officially opened the brand new STEM building at East Berks College today (Langley campus).
Wayne gave an incredibly motivating speech in which he talked about his career to date and how he made his fortune, including how his wife sayng 'yes' led to two amazing opportunities which ended up in them supplying Macy's in New York (and launching Red or Dead), and designing an award-winning housing estate in Tyneside.
He went on to tell the students in the room to grasp opportunities with both hands as these two successes were both achieved without experience in either market but following enterprise and hard work!
Wayne is now involved in the construction and building industry with his company Hemingway Design and is patron of The Unite Foundation, a charity providing free university accommodation to young people in the UK who hail from challenging backgrounds.
This made him the perfect person to open the new STEM and research building built with improved facilities to meet the training needs of the local construction industry. It enables students to develop the specialist higher level skills which employers need - all in an incredibly realistic work environment.
The building includes a life-size bungalow, built from scratch with a timber frame and brick exterior then wired, plumbed, plastered and decorated by the students from the relevant departments.
The rooms include a working kitchen and bathroom plus living area.
The facilities will help address the skills shortage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths which has been identified in the UK.
Massive congratulations to everyone involved as it is an amazing facility.
