The Emergency Department is opened 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and has a helicopter pad to receive and patients across the South of England.
The service is led by consultants with the support of other medical and nursing staff.
The most seriously ill or injured patients get treated first.
All people who wait in the Emergency Department will be seen by trained staff but if their condition is not serious they may be advised to go to their GP instead of waiting. If patients choose to stay, the aim is for them to be seen within 4 hours.
There is a specialist emergency area for children, staffed by a Paediatrics Emergency Nurse and a Play Assistant.
It is housed within the main Emergency area and has its own waiting area and treatment rooms.
