A good nights sleep under canvas for the first time this trip. Having paid my dues at the camp office and caught up on my blog, I was on the road to Hamburg by 10am.
A bit of drizzle and heavy traffic, I rode steadily for 3 hours. The occasional stop to stretch, snack and check maps. I didn't get lost until 1pm, haha I'm improving. This was on the outskirts of Wedel. The usual town and city problems I encounter without GPS.
As I approached Hamburg, there was heavy traffic, so I decided to pull over at a diner. Having scoffed from the help yourself buffet I took advice from the cashier about my pending approach to Hamburg. She told me that there was the Harbour Festival taking place over the next few days and was not to be missed. This a massive annual event lasting 2 days. I chose to avoid the whole thing and ride on.
I crossed a long bridge over the River Elbe, through the impressive docklands of Hamburg. I could imagine these docks during the 2nd world war being a hive of industry churning out warships by the dozen. I kept on riding through well lit tunnels and bypassing this beautiful city. Should I stop to explore? No , the Arctic is calling.
Bess is riding well, purring and eating the miles. Late afternoon we cross the border in to Denmark. Up to now all the countries have used Euros. Now into Denmark we are in the land of the Krona or Danish crown. I am carrying £50 batches of several currencies hidden in a fake baked bean tin. This avoids using ATMs on borders. It may sound like paranoia but research had shown that these points are risky for travellers.
Having crossed the border at Flensburg I rode on to Kolding and stopped at a hostel for the night. Tomorrow would be the first big challenge I face, The Ostund Sea Bridge to Sweden. This bridge is infamous for its high cross winds, not good for a motorcycle. But I was to find that the bridge would be least of my worries as I was going to have to run for my life.
