City of Wolverhampton Council will stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine tomorrow by raising the nation’s flag outside its headquarters to celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day.
The blue and yellow Ukrainian flag will be raised in St. Peter’s Square outside Wolverhampton Civic Centre at 10am tomorrow (Wednesday 24 August) by the City’s Mayor, Councillor Sandra Samuels OBE.
Members of the city’s Ukrainian community will be in attendance, alongside city councillors, with members of the public also welcome to attend.
Mayor of the City of Wolverhampton, Councillor Sandra Samuels OBE, said: “It will be my honour to raise the flag of Ukraine to celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day. It is a particularly poignant day as it is also exactly six months since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
“I hope as many people as possible are able to come along and join us to celebrate and show their solidarity with our Ukrainian friends in our community and beyond.”
Councillor Ian Brookfield, Leader of City of Wolverhampton Council, said: “Our city has a long-established Ukrainian community, and we want to show our City’s support. At times like this, it’s especially vital that all those in the world who believe in freedom, democracy and the rule of law join together.”
Councillor Wendy Thompson, Leader of City of Wolverhampton Council’s opposition Conservative Group, said: “We cannot change the ongoing situation in Ukraine, but we can send our message of support and wholehearted solidarity. Our thoughts are with all Ukrainians near and far as we celebrate their country’s Independence Day together.”
The City of Wolverhampton Council stands with and expresses its support for the people of Ukraine and the Ukrainian community in our City following the illegal invasion by the Russian State of the independent democratically elected sovereign Ukrainian nation state.
