One of Korea’s most engaging and exciting children’s theatre performers, Kim Soree, returns to Wolverhampton for her new one-woman show, Seed Story.

After delighting audiences of all ages in Korea, the play has now been translated ready to perform in English especially for this mini-tour, and this therefore is a unique chance to see a unique piece of family theatre.

Kim Soree is not entirely new to Wolverhampton. In a 2006 drama project supported by Newhampton Arts Centre, she worked with the reception class at St Andrew’s School, Wolverhampton. The project began online, where the local school linked with students in Seoul, South Korea; and the children then created a play together entitled ‘Tiger Trail’’.

The online collaboration did not stop there, Soree decided to surprise the children with an unexpected visit, jumping out of a big box in their classroom. The play later opened at the NAC before a hugely successful national tour with Moby Duck Theatre Company.

Soree has wanted to come back to Wolverhampton ever since, and when her
Seed Story was invited to a festival in Wales, she grabbed the opportunity to fit in an extra performance here, on her way back east.

She says “ I have really special memories of the children from St Andrews, [the ‘Rascals’ they were called] and the story we made up together, with tigers, an evil binman, and a volcano. I hope some of them will remember Tiger Trail, and come along now to watch this new play, although I suppose they will all be twenty now!”

Using her formidable range of skills as an actor, puppeteer and storyteller, Seed story, aimed at 5+ and families tells the tale of girl who walked tightropes met a boy who dug holes, they find out they have the same dream after an old woman gives them the rainbow seed. This imaginative play has a style all of its own and will capture the imaginations of children and families alike.

Peter Wynne-Willson, the Birmingham-based director who worked with Soree on Tiger Trail, and again on the world tour of Korean War drama The Bridge, says:

“Soree is quite simply the most talented performer I have ever worked with. She could simply be a professional musician, performing on Korean traditional instruments, or a comedian, or a dancer or singer, or a puppeteer or storyteller. But she is all of those things, and more, and I have seen her work her magic across language and cultural barriers on many occasions. I am thrilled to have the chance to bring her back here to share this beautiful new play. I saw it in Seoul in Korean, and loved its simplicity and playfulness, and I think the audience here will love this special English version”
