Around 500 food lovers are expected to descend on Wolverhampton on Sunday, 8th September 2019 as one of the country’s largest events of its kind rolls into town to coincide with 75 years of Veganism.
Visitors to the Wolverhampton Vegan Fayre will be greeted by around 40 stalls selling food, clothes jewellery, beauty products and can learn more about plant based and eco- living.
Organisers of the event are hoping that the event will be a great opportunity to set up connections within the local community and raise awareness of the vegan lifestyle.
Although much older, Veganism was first coined in November 1944 by Donald Watson, a teacher, in Leicester. The Vegan Society was formed and over the years the number of adherents has increased dramatically – particularly during the last decade. Donald would go on to campaign for animal rights until he died at 95 years of age in 2005.
Vegans avoid all animal products and take an active role in promoting awareness of animal rights.
Wolverhampton has played a leading role in this movement and a popular annual event has been staged in the town for the last decade. Attracting food lovers and seekers from across the country.
This year’s event will take place at Goldthorn Hotel, 126 Penn Road, where visitors will be greeted to live music, yoga and activist speakers as well as a multitude of stalls selling plant based products.
Event planners wanted to continue the legacy of organisers of the annual vegan event at the Civic centre, however for the last two years have not been able to put on the event due to ongoing repairs at the venue.
Amandeep Singh, one of the event organisers and activists from Wolverhampton Vegans explained: “Midland Vegan Campaigns has been doing this event for 10 years. We have taken on this smaller venue this year as the civic centre is closed for repairs. We are expecting around 500 people. The event has drawn up to 1000 in the past from across the UK and is one of the oldest events of its kind in the country! The intention is to create connections between local businesses and vegans in the Midlands. So even after the fayre those links will hopefully strengthen and we can reach out. There will be round 40 stalls as well as 3 speakers, a yoga class and live music from 4 musicians. There is something for everyone.”
“Guest speakers include 74 year old multiple record holder Pat Reeves and Psycho Syd. Both who have conquered cancer through a plant based lifestyle. There will be live music on the day too. Both bars will be open and a sit down Sunday lunch will be available. We want to prepare Wolverhampton for the changing demands on the planet due to the issues surrounding climate change by creating a circle of service providers to make a better future for our children and for a better tomorrow.” He added,
Entry costs £1 at the door with sit down lunch available at £9.95. Yoga classes are £4. The event takes place between 10am and 4pm and there will be free goodies for early arrivals too!
