Wolverhampton City Council is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded £30,000 from Youth Music to deliver an innovative grassroots music initiative at Wolverhampton Art Gallery.
The funding, granted through the Youth Music Trailblazer Fund, will support the expansion of Road2Release – a dynamic music project empowering young people in the city to make, learn and earn in music.
Originally piloted in October half-term with celebrated local grime artist Reepa, Road2Release received an overwhelmingly positive response from participants and the community.
Building on its success, the project will now run for six weeks with three different cohorts across the year and provide more in-depth, tailored support for aspiring young musicians aged 25 and under.
The Trailblazer Fund from Youth Music is designed to support projects that trial new ways of working, sustain grassroots programmes, or disrupt the status quo – and Road2Release aims to do all three.
Through the extended programme, participants will gain access to music industry experts, hands-on experience in a professional setting, and paid opportunities to develop and showcase their skills.
Set against the backdrop of Wolverhampton’s rich musical heritage, this programme not only nurtures local talent but also reimagines the role that museums and galleries can play in supporting the music industry. The project is particularly focused on helping young people facing barriers to entry - whether social, economic, or cultural - gain the confidence, skills, and pathways needed to build sustainable careers in music.
Councillor Chris Burden, Cabinet Member for City Development, Jobs and Skills, said: "We are thrilled to receive this generous funding from Youth Music, which will enable us to further develop the ROAD2RELEASE project at Wolverhampton Art Gallery.
“This initiative is a testament to our commitment to nurturing young talent and providing them with the resources and opportunities to thrive in the music industry. By partnering with local artists like Reepa, we are creating a vibrant, supportive environment where emerging musicians can connect, learn, and grow.
“This project not only enriches our community but also empowers our young people to pursue their passions and build successful careers in music."
