The tariffs, offered by most major providers, provide home broadband and mobile connectivity at reduced prices for people in receipt of certain benefits such as Universal Credit.
City of Wolverhampton Council is encouraging people to check if they are eligible for social tariffs.
They are also being encouraged to make use of the National Databank, which gives out free SIM cards through participating regional organisations.
There are more than 1,700 local community organisations offering free mobile data across the UK.
Councillor Obaida Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Digital and Community Inclusion at City of Wolverhampton Council, said: “We are committed to digital inclusion and breaking down any barriers to digital services and opportunities.
“We have already done some great work in bridging the digital divide through our network of more than 70 trusted partners, helping people with access to loaned or gifted devices, connectivity and digital skills training.
“However, with nearly half the residents in the West Midlands having limited access to the internet we must not let up in our efforts.
“We are determined to see 100 per cent of Wolverhampton residents being able to access digital services, interact with friends and family, and enter the job market.
“That is why it is so important for those who are eligible to be aware of social tariffs and the data bank, which could be the difference between people being able to afford to get online or not.”
Only 5.1 per cent of those eligible across the country are signed up to a social tariff, which range in price from £10 to £25 per month. Eligibility varies by supplier, so it is recommended you get in touch with your current provider, or check out OFCOM’s resources to see whether you are eligible and what tariffs are available.
