Wolverhampton University recently hosted an inspiring Human Rights Day event, organised by It’s Our Right, a campaign dedicated to advocating for equality and justice. The event united survivors, advocates, and freedom fighters in powerful discussions about the critical topic of human rights.

One of the featured speakers was Birmingham poet, author, and domestic violence advocate Lisa Connolly. Her debut book, Built from Broken, has garnered widespread acclaim, reaching number 7 on the Amazon bestseller charts within 48 hours of its release and climbing to number 6 a week later. Connolly, who has collaborated with It’s Our Right as part of the 1in3 Arts Council-funded project, passionately supports the organisation’s mission and the change it strives to create.

Reflecting on the event, Connolly shared:

“Human Rights Day at Wolverhampton University was truly incredible! It was an honour to listen to survivors, advocates, and freedom fighters coming together to discuss such an important topic. I shared a new poem I wrote in honour of 1in3—my heartfelt way of saying thank you for all they’ve done, not just for the cause but for me personally. I also read ten poems from Built from Broken. The strength and passion in the room were beyond inspiring. Let’s keep making waves for change!”

Lisa first sought help from Women’s Aid in January 2019. The following month, she walked through the doors of We:ARE run by Jacky and Donna to attend their Freedom Programme workshop for the first time.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” Lisa explained, “but it was a lifeline—a space where I found understanding, tools, and hope. That moment marked the start of my journey to healing. The rest is history.”

Lisa’s journey from survivor to advocate has been transformative.   “Healing isn’t linear, but every step forward matters,” she said. “I’ve been transparent about my journey, encouraging others to speak up while sharing what worked for me. One size doesn’t fit all, but I believe in creating safe spaces where connection and healing can thrive.”

In addition to her poetry, advocacy, and counselling, Lisa is a recovery support worker and wellness coach. She runs her own business, Built from Broken, where she offers integrative counselling, wellness coaching, and workshops, providing a safe and supportive environment for those in need.

Lisa is also collaborating with a team on a play and is in the process of writing her second book, set to release next year. Reflecting on her journey as a writer, she shared:

“This has been an emotional rollercoaster. A few obstacles could have prevented the publication of Built from Broken, but I regrouped, and it was the best decision I made. Publishing my book in my own name means so much to me. Years after surviving abuse, I own my story and have turned my pain into purpose.”

Lisa Connolly’s work—through poetry, counselling, and advocacy—continues to inspire meaningful change, shining a light on resilience, hope, and the transformative power of human connection.
