Wolverhampton Art Gallery begins its 2023 programme with a cluster of exhibitions featuring work by artists with strong links to Wolverhampton.
Fine Lines: Contemporary Drawing by Steve Evans presents abstract drawings that take inspiration from the geometries of the built environment.
Steve Evans’ drawings are informed by the geometries and structures of the built environment. He explores the mathematics and poetics of architectural form through pattern, layering and colour. His linear compositions evoke the spatial relationships of the buildings we inhabit and encounter in our daily lives.
Evans is a Wolverhampton-based artist who came to making art as a second career, having previously worked as a structural engineer. Ideas for works are informed by his design background and are often triggered by unusual shapes and structures that catch his engineer’s eye. These become the starting point for abstract compositions in two- and three-dimensions.
The exhibition includes a small selection of influential works from the artist’s private collection and works on paper from the Gallery’s permanent art collections.
Cabinet Member for City Economy, Councillor Stephen Simkins said:
“This exhibition takes into account a number of elements that factor into our daily lives and show how one item can be seen and interpreted in different ways. This is just the start of an exciting programme that Wolverhampton art Gallery has to offer for 2023.”
The exhibition is free. Wolverhampton Art Gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10.30am until 4.30pm and Sunday 11am until 4pm. More information about the exhibition and the events and activities is at www.wolverhamptonart.org.uk
