WV1 Studio is excited to announce our first exhibit of 2020. Fine artist, Tariq Evans, is going to be working with us to produce his first solo show.
Mystery Psychedelic Distortion is a transcendent visual journey exploring explicit commanding responses of uneasiness towards certain depictions that evoke fear and discomfort. Tariq, plans to highlight and examine aspects such as atmosphere and how it can be manipulated to cause discomfort and abjection within an individual.
Speaking to Tariq, he had the following information to say:
“What makes a place inspire discomfort and why do we tense up in some locations and not others? Commonly what’s portrayed is initially documented and referenced beforehand so that we understand what we’re looking in too. We see these concepts being portrayed in forms of art and media such as horror movies, books, music, and drawings/paintings. When we have this reaction from a form of visual art or literature, we disassociate from the real world creating an interesting relationship where we provide the artwork with the power to influence our emotions, our complex associations with what’s being depicted, and our innate curiosity created from the work.“
“By the end of the project I plan on creating a body of artwork that effectively reflects my established research and discussion from other artists in a visual aspect. I intend to make the work routed in the familiarity and the uncanny. I believe the reason we can so easily brush aside many of the typical forms of horror is that they so clearly exist outside of anything we would accept in the real world. Because of this we can therefore disassociate from what’s real and what isn’t do it being purely based in fantasy. I intend to work with humanoid figures to further compliment this theme. work that blends elements of the ordinary with the outworldly to suggest a sense of uncanny familiarity and discomfort. “
WV1 Studio manager, Jason Fullwood had the following to say:
“We are thrilled to be working with Tariq Evans. An artist of his calibre is something that doesn’t come along that often. Within the arts community, we meet so many talented individuals who contribute towards various exhibits and community based projects. We see incredible talent within Tariq when we both exhibited at the Lighthouse Media Centre’s exhibition for Support Life (an exhibit that helped raise awareness of suicide prevention and mental health awareness). I look forward to see what Tariq creates and await in anticipation what the final artworks look like.”
