The Poet in Residence at 101.8 WCR FM in Wolverhampton has written a new poem to mark World Buy Nothing Day on 25th November.
"This is an international day of protest" explained Ian Henery, Poet in Residence "and a 24 hour detox against consumerism that coincides with Black Friday. It`s an opportunity for people to tune into the impact we have on the environment to help solve the climate crisis."
World Buy Nothing Day was started by Adbusters in the 90`s and is celebrated each year in over 50 countries.
"People can participate by not participating" explained Ian Henery. "Doing nothing is doing something. We need to reduce consumerism, even if it`s only for 24 hours, to change our attitudes on single use packaging, fast fashion and throw away culture."
It`s estimated:
1. 125,000 tonnes of plastic packaging are generated around Christmas time in the UK
2. 300,000 tonnes of clothes are burned or sent to landfill in the UK each year.
A new research study has set out the potential impacts of climate change on businesses, infrastructure and people`s health in the West Midlands in the decades ahead.
"A Summary of Climate Change Impacts in the West Midlands Combined Authority Area" uses the latest data to chart the predicted impact of increased cases of severe flooding, water scarcity and more intense and prolonged heatwaves.
"There are serious issues linked to shopping" said Ian Henery "which expose the environmental and ethical consequences of consumerism. The rich countries (20% of the world`s population) are consuming over 80% of the world`s natural resources causing a disproportionate level of environmental damage and unfair distribution of wealth".
