Her Majesty the Queen will become the first British monarch in history to reach her platinum jubilee later this year and City of Wolverhampton Council is making it easy for residents to celebrate with street parties by waiving its normal road closure fees.
The council has scrapped the usual fee to encourage communities to get together and celebrate the historic occasion over the extended jubilee bank holiday weekend from 2 to 5 June 2022. The city’s Public Events Safety Advisory Group will also work with party organisers to help them deliver safe and successful events.
As part of the national celebrations for the jubilee, people are being encouraged to “share friendship, food and fun with neighbours” with traditional community get togethers. Councillor Philip Page, chairman of City of Wolverhampton Council’s regulatory committee said: “This is an historic occasion for the nation and the Commonwealth and people will be celebrating across the world.
“We want as many people as possible to celebrate here in Wolverhampton with their friends and neighbours, particularly after the past two years of distancing and lockdowns.
"We hope that by removing the financial barriers to having these parties, it will encourage more people to step up to the challenge of organising one for their street.” Meanwhile, Wulfrunians are also being encouraged to enter their culinary creations as part of the national Platinum Pudding competition.
Buckingham Palace wants the nation’s bakers, aged 8 and over, to come up with the perfect pudding recipe dedicated to the Queen before the deadline of 4 February. The winning recipe will be chosen by an expert judging panel including Dame Mary Berry, Monica Galetti and Buckingham Palace head chef Mark Flanagan and will be shared with the public.
The waiving of road closure application fees only applies to not-for-profit community events; commercial events will be charged as normal.
