"They are as heartfelt and spirited as any music you are likely to hear", wrote Peter Culshaw, artdesk.co.uk. On Sunday 7th April Songs of the Mystics Sufi Qawwali comes to Wolverhampton at the Newhampton Art Centre with Najmuddin Saifuddin & Group.Supported using public funding by the Arts Council England, this is a night celebrating music and arts from South Asia. The family of Qawwal Najmuddin Saifuddin Group trace their ancestry back to the 13th century and are considered today the leading singers of the Sufi Qawwali tradition. Their songs are thousands of years of mystic poetry, which has been passed on from generation to generation. The songs, which constitute the qawwali repertoire, are in a number of languages. Those from the classical period are in dialects of north India like Brajbhasha and Awadhi. These dialects continue to have huge influence on qawwali in other languages. There is a rich tradition in other languages like Urdu, Punjabi, Persian and Saraiki. Further details are available from: www.sama.co.uk info@sama.co.uk www.newhamptonarts.co.uk Tel 01902 572090
