City of Wolverhampton Council is welcoming views on a new open space strategy and action plan for public spaces across the city.

This long-term strategy aims to make sure local open spaces meet the needs of residents.

These might be formal parks and recreation grounds, children’s play areas, smaller green spaces or natural areas with a focus on conservation.

People can complete an online survey to help council planners understand more about how residents use open areas and play spaces across Wolverhampton.

The survey asks how satisfied people are with the quality of the city’s existing open spaces and what additional types of provision may be needed in the future.

Views will form an important planning document for the council and help it to identify ways in which all residents across the city can have access to open spaces.

The strategy will also highlight those areas that may require additional provision and help inform the Wolverhampton Local Plan, which will provide a framework for new developments and identify new housing and employment sites in the city.

Councillor Stephen Simkins, City of Wolverhampton Council Acting Leader and Cabinet Member for Inclusive City Economy, said: “I’d like to encourage residents to take a few minutes to complete this important survey.

“Our fabulous open spaces and play areas provide great places for leisure, fun and enjoyment as well as offering many wellbeing and health benefits.

“During the Covid-19 pandemic, the city’s green pockets became particularly important, and it might be that people have changed the way they view and use our open spaces as a result.

“By completing the survey, people will be able to share with us why these areas matter, what they would like to see in the future and help us to make sure we provide places that are inclusive to all communities.

“We’d like to receive feedback to help us develop and offer open spaces and play areas that meet different geographical, social and health needs, as well as identifying the best ways to help us work towards meeting the challenges of climate change.”
