The groundbreaking "1in3" project, an initiative aimed at combating gender-based violence through artistic expression, has launched a series of workshops designed to foster inclusivity and raise awareness.
Generously funded by ACE and with the invaluable support of Anne-Marie Langram, "1in3" seeks to shine a light on the pervasive issue of gender-based violence affecting not only women but also men and LGBTQ+ individuals. Gender-based violence remains a critical issue across all communities. Statistics reveal that one in three women will experience violence in their lifetime, and it's equally important to recognize that one in six men will face sexual violence.
LGBTQ+ individuals also experience alarmingly high rates of intimate partner violence, with nearly half reporting such encounters. "1in3" aims to address these issues head-on by creating a platform for all affected individuals to express their experiences and perspectives through art.
One of the participants in the workshops is Wolverhampton poet Janet Chand. She said:
"I am supporting this great project, addressing gender and domestic violence. Using writing as a therapy, peer support and planned professional activities, including mindfulness, has allowed women to find their voices and healing words in a safe, supportive place.
If my poems raise awareness about the ongoing effects of abuse, then I am happy. I believe that writing is a therapy".
Janet has read her poems at the Raising Steam Festival and she is involved in the historical Aethelflaed project at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. She has also been involved with Wolverhampton Literature Festival with N.E. Writers. Janet has sonnets published by Earth Lovers from the Black Country.
"1in3" will host a series of artistic workshops led by professional artists, providing a safe and supportive environment for participants to explore and share their experiences of gender-based violence. These workshops will empower individuals to use art as a medium for healing and expression, ultimately creating a collection of powerful artworks that reflect the diverse experiences of those affected.
The culmination of these workshops will be a public exhibition held at the Mander Center in Wolverhampton from November 4th to 7th. This exhibition will serve as a platform to raise awareness, foster dialogue, and promote a deeper understanding of the impact of gender-based violence on individuals and communities.
Fragile Wings
by Janet Chand
Fragile wings were broken.
All freedom was curtailed.
Brightness into darkness paled.
The abyss grasped the spirit
But eventually, it lost its grip.
Slowly, carefully, quietly,
A new being forged in life`s dip.
Warmth and light began to shine.
The wings had healed and life was fine.
