It's Official! Wolverhampton is the Curry Capital of Midlands.

Wolverhampton was yet again placed 3rd in the Curry Capital of Britain competition - well ahead of Birmingham in 7th, Leicester (5th) and Nottingham (9th). So - Wolverhampton can rightly claim to be the Curry Capital of the Midlands as the highest placed city.

The City Centre Company, WV1 pulled together Wolverhampton's entry, and earned high praise from the event organisers for the innovative submission, which included a specially recorded version of the Wolverhampton Curry Capital song. "Team Wolverhampton", which represented the city, is made up of Anise Restaurant and The Bilash, both in the city centre, Cafe Rickshaw in Chapel Ash and Massalla Club in Tettenhall.

National Curry Week organiser Peter Grove said: “In most other years the performance by Kim Gilmour and the Wolverhampton team would have won the title easily. They held a great launch event, voted in a good team and built up a huge body of support from Mayor Bert Turner and local media Express & Star, 107.7 The Wolf and Beacon radio, to thousands of Wolverhampton curry lovers.  However, the efforts of Glasgow and Bradford were by far the best ever, with enough votes to cause the voting system to crash twice.”

Kim Gilmour, WV One Director said: “It’s great to come third after such stiff competition from cities which have been competing for years.  Both Bradford and Glasgow had great public support with more than twice our population so for the smallest city in the top ten of cities placed, Team Wolverhampton did a fantastic job in only our second year of competing.” She added “If Bradford can claim to be the winner of England’s Curry Capital in 2010 and Glasgow is Curry Capital of Scotland in 2011 then I think we have every justification to claim the crown of Curry Capital of the Midlands. Birmingham came 5th last year, and slipped to 7th this year, so we certainly are the best in the Midlands!”

As curry lovers, and locals, we are a little biased at 'thebestofwolverhampton' - we already know that some of the best curries in the UK are served in Wolverhampton curry houses. We offer our congratulations to everyone involved, the 4 fantastic restaurants, and WV1 - and a special "WELL DONE" to Iliyas and the guys at Anise Restaurant who's customers have already voted them one of Wolverhampton's best business - see here -
