A charitable organisation which exists to maximise the quality of life for life-limited or life-threatened children and their families in Woodbridge, Aldeburgh and throughout East Anglia
There are three children’s hospices in our region, all run by ‘East
Anglia's Children's Hospices’ (EACH) Ipswich, near Woodbridge (Suffolk), Quidenham (Norfolk) and Milton (Cambs).
This charitable organisation provides one-to-one nursing care for children from birth up to twenty-one years of age.
Far from being grim, sombre places, strange as it may seem, Children’s Hospices are happy, noisy places, most of the time. They’re very much a ‘place for living’, with a home-from-home environment.
Cheerful surroundings and special play equipment help to make the most of precious time and allow each child to reach its full potential, whatever that may be. A large percentage of the work is carried out, not in the hospices themselves, but in family homes.
Children’s Hospices are quite separate from adult hospices, in terms of funding and the care it offers. For instance, EACH nurses are often involved in caring for a child and their family – parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents, uncles and aunts – over many years, especially when a child’s condition gradually deteriorates. Support continues for as long as it’s needed, during and after bereavement.
Such intensive, personal care does not come cheap: this year alone it will cost around £4million to run EACH with only around 10% of that funding coming from statutory sources - no charge is made to those families using the services, so fundraising, charitable donation and the goodwill of the public are therefore vital.
Care by the hospice nurses is second to none and is much appreciated by the families who benefit from their dedication and expertise. One mother said “The Children’s Hospice has been my lifesaver, it would have been so difficult to manage without the support we’ve received. The staff are so brilliant – I can’t thank them enough”.
