Celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee 2012 in Suffolk
With six weeks left to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations I thought that it would be fun to bring you some interesting facts from the six decades spanning from The Coronation in 1952 to her Diamond Jubilee milestone this June 2012.
This week, in a fashionable colour of the decade, we will have a quick peek into the years from 1952 – 1962
1952 – 1962
1952 - The Queen's Coronation
1960 - Another birth in the Royal Family. Andrew, Duke of York was born in 1960, a whole decade after the last child was born to the Queen and Prince Philip. Brother to Charles, Prince of Wales, born in 1948 and to Anne, Princess Royal, born in 1950.
Britain's first supermarket, commercial TV channel, passenger jet and motorway were all introduced in quick succession during the ten-year period.
British society was changing at all levels. There were more women in the workplace, immigrants were arriving from Jamaica and music was transformed by the arrival of rock 'n' roll and Elvis from the US.
Food rationing and hire-purchase restrictions were abolished leading to a boom in sales of food, radios, televisions and refrigerators.
Sainsbury's and Waitrose opened the first self-service supermarkets and the first soap powders designed for new low-cost washing machines hit the market.
'Go to work on an egg' and 'Drinka pinta milka day' were among the most famous catch phrases of the time.
Recipe of the Decade
Coronation Chicken
Invented by Constance Spry and served at the Queen’s coronation lunch in 1953
21/2 kg chicken, skinned and off the bone
For the sauce
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 tbsp curry paste
1 tbsp tomato puree
100ml red wine
1 bay leaf
1 small lemon, juiced
2 apricots, halved, pureed in blender
300ml mayonnaise
100ml whipping cream
Seasoning
Method
Cut the chicken into small pieces and grill it until cooked.
Heat the oil in a small saucepan and sauté the onion for about three minutes, until softened. Add the curry paste, tomato puree, wine, bay leaf and lemon juice. Simmer, uncovered, for about 10 minutes until well reduced. Stir occasionally. Strain and leave to cool.
Combine the puréed apricots with the mayonnaise and the cooled sauce. Whip the cream to stiff peaks and fold into the mixture.
1950’s Cocktail
Many new cocktails were introduced and consumed during this decade!
The Classic Champagne Cocktail
Just drop a sugar cube into a champagne flute, add 2-3 dashes of Angostura Bitters, and fill the flute with champagne!

Right Royal Ghosts!
Location: Meyton (Suffolk) - The two bridges in the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 19th May (reoccurring)
A ghostly coach and four horses pass over this bridge once a year. It is said to be driven by a headless Sir Thomas Boleyn, and is one of eleven bridges that he passes over on the night of his daughter Anne's execution. So, if you happen to be in the area around 19th May keep your ears and eyes open!
