The EU gives guidance that children should have at least 1 hour of exercise a day and that adults should be undertaking at least 30 minutes for at least 5 days a week. One of the great ways of achieving this is by attending dance classes. By going to a dance lesson not only are you increasing your exercise which will help reduce stress, help you relax, form stronger bones and muscles and help with weight control, you are also able to meet new people and have fun at the same time.
Dance is a great alternative for people who aren’t sporty and for whom the idea of running around a pitch or slogging away at the gym is their idea of a nightmare. Dance will give the benefits of these activities but in a way that could be more enjoyable as it’s a group activity that is more fun and can provide an outlet for creativity.
As well as being a good outlet for creative juices it also has other benefits. Flexibility is one of the main ones as dancers have to have a full range of motion for all the major muscles and the greater a person’s range of motion, the more their muscles are able to extend and flex. As a result, all dance lessons will begin with a warmup that comprise several stretching exercises.
A person’s strength will also be increased simply by dancing as the muscles will be able to exert greater force against the resistance of the dancer’s body weight. While styles of dance such as jazz and ballet will probably end up increasing strength by a fair amount, other forms such as ballroom dancing will increase strength too.
As will all regular exercise, stamina will also be increased and you will find that the more you dance the longer you will be able to sustain the exercise.
The result of all of these things is that you will feel a greater sense of wellbeing which will also be enhanced by the fact that dancing is a social activity which can help increase self-esteem and positive outlook as well as self-confidence.
