The Flying Scotsman, a Yorkshire built locomotive is making an astounding return to the railway this summer. Originating from the North East line to London, Flying Scotsman has reached heights other locomotives are not possible of grasping. The train itself has set two world records, as well as being the first locomotive to reach the 100 mph milestone! In the early 2000’s, through the efforts of the citizenry, Scotsman was declared a national treasure and saved from neglect. Previously (late 20th century), lack of finances resulted in Scotsman being stranded in the US in 1969. It was not until 1973 that Scotsman eventually made it back to the UK.
The attentive restoration conducted by Riley and Son has allowed Scotsman to return, to the exhibit, prior the embarking of a national tour. This tour incorporates travels stemming from either the North East or London. Examples of lines taken include the “Waverly” (York to Carlisle) and the “Tynesider“ (Cleethorpes to Morpeth via York). The popularity of this event has been shown through sales of tickets; all shows dating up to late September this year have been sold out. Under the guise 60103, Scotsman will journey to Oakham and Melton this Saturday, hopefully the events of June 4th have set a precedent and many will go to view the spectacle!
Along with being able to view Flying Scotsman in action, other wholesome activities have been organised! Such events include talks and informal meets on the topic of locomotives. The topics covered include service and style, and the preservation of the traditions set in motion by Flying Scotsman. Along side these talks, a “1960’s shindig” is taking place in late July! This event will incorporate a buffet and live music; the perfect setting for those with common interest in Scotsman to converse.
Any readers, who have been on previous trips, please feel free to enrich us on your experience! We’re dying to hear all about it! One can only imagine the views laid before those lucky enough to see such an event!
