In a nutshell, York is a vibrant, beautiful city with a great orientation around family. Through this, there are multiple activities in which children would be the key target audience. Whether your kid is into history, art or general play, York caters for all family dynamics!
First and foremost is the Jorvik Centre! This is where history and family fun really culminate together in York. The centre itself is a mechanical ride, which allows the user to immerse oneself in Viking history. Through the work conducted during excavations in the previous century, visitors are able to be transported around a factually realistic Viking village, complete with all senses delivered for. Even the smell is realistic! To enhance the realism, actual remains are visible from below your very feet! Accompanying this thrilling ride is a gift shop selling all the children’s favourites, including toy Viking armour/weapons and souvenirs.
Along with the Jorvik Centre is Rainbows Ceramic Café! This niche establishment on the top of Bootham enables the whole family to take part in painting their own ceramics. This in itself is a beautiful opportunity to create long lasting memories that you can keep right in your household! Be it for a birthday or national holiday, Rainbows Ceramics caters for all! An array of ceramics can be painted, all of which we are sure have the capability to gain significant sentimental value!
Taking a dark path, the York Dungeon is a firm favourite within the city! The dungeon offers a hilarious, well-directed and spooky side delivery towards York’s darker history. Via the remarkable work of actors, special effects and second to none settings, you’’ feel like you’ve been transported back through time! As well as incredible characters that revolve around past universal epidemics (e.g. Plague Doctors), Yorks darker aspects are portrayed also; examples that spring to mind are that of the Vikings and Guy Fawkes. As far as attractions go, the York Dungeon takes including the audience t a whole new level. You will be subject to interaction with all the characters the dungeon has to offer!
In terms of deliciousness, you can’t go wrong with York’s Chocolate Story. Here members of the public can walk through York’s history in chocolate, and also indulge themselves in the sweet stuff afterwards! The shop brings together beautiful brands from all over the world, as well as their own homemade brand! Not only this, but also children’s parties and master classes in chocolate making are available for hire! Through this, children can learn to mould and decorate different chocolates, fun for the whole family!
Last but not the least, the National Railway Museum! The approximate accumulation of over one million visitors annually shows the incredible experiences that lay at your feet. At the NRM, visitors can immerse themselves in the rich history of the railway industry; this includes their unfathomable collection of locomotives, including the Duchess of Hamilton! Beautiful artwork of the locomotives can be seen accompanying them also!
We hope that this hand picked selection offers some insight into the beautiful activities York has to offer; we’d love to hear back from all who have had such experiences!
